- Elemental Quarters — Across the magical traditions of the world we find evidence of a primordial practice of mapping and anchoring the spiritual realm to the physical landscape. For most, this act of hallowing space begins by defining and honoring the four cardinal directions, the sky above, and the underworld below. - Sigil Creation with Planeta... — Building off the introduction to Planetary Magic Squares posted earlier, this is an example on how to use them to create sigils to manifest a desired outcome. The Grant Morrison video, I posted a while back provides a great introduction into sigil magic. At its core is the concept of abstracting a directed intent into a symbol [...]
- Planetary Magic Squares — This is a brief introduction into Planetary Magic Squares. My intention is to set the stage for a later post in which I will describe my methods for working with these Magic Squares to construct and charge sigils. Love your website ! Why were the numbers chose in the first place ? Ie why seven for Venus? When 5 is normally associated to this star ? Kind regards
Greetings Gavin,
Thanks for stopping by and for commenting.
The planetary numbers as they correspond to the magic squares came into western magic via Henry Cornelius Agrippa though their sources are undoubtably quite a bit older (at least medieval Islam). The order (i.e. the number of rows or columns) of the squares are linked to Neoplatonic cosmology and the theories regarding the emanations of the planets. Here the planetary spheres are counted after the source (1) and the realm of fixed stars (2). Thus the first/furthest planet is Saturn(3), followed by Jupiter (4), Mars(5), Sun(6), Venus(7), Mercury(8) and Moon(9). This is the rather common system in traditions that employ Qabalah/Kabbalah and it is how you will find the planets laid out in the ’Tree of Life’ diagrams.
Other correspondence systems can be formed using a variety of methods – one such can be found in the planetary geometries via their conjunction cycles with the sun (see the discussion at the bottom of Sun: IGNIS CENTRUM). But none of these others have a connection to the Magic Squares.
Many thanks for your concise answer.. still wading through all your great work.
I have one further question reference do you have any material on the Sun’s geometric makeup. I am thinking on the grounds of pyramids?
Thanks again
The thing with the planetary ecliptic geometries is that they are based on the relationship with the sun. The Sun’s geometry would in turn be in relation to the earth. This would likely make it a quadrangle given the 4 Solstice & Equinox points. Since a pyramid has a square base, I think you are correct.
I don’t have anything offhand that I can recall discussing this. I never really delved into it, but I know that there is a ton of material on the geometry of the Great Pyramid in Giza and its relation to solar and earth measurements. You might want to look into that.
I like your answer and thanks again
My pleasure 🙂 I hope your studies are fruitful, let me know if you follow be anything of interest!
I notice that every planet has a different shape in the Zodiac (above the magic square) for example square is for the Sun, six pointed star for Mars, nothing for Saturn, what is that about and how is it determined? 🙂 By the way love your website
Greetings Dezy,
Thanks for stopping by and for commenting. Those planetary geometries are based on their conjunction cycles with the sun. I’ve discussed this more in depth at the end of this post: http://voces-magicae.com/2009/11/14/sun-ignis-centrum/
